As of Oct. 1, winter driving rules come into effect across much of the province. The regulation requires drivers to use winter tires on many highways until April 30. For routes without heavy snowfall or mountain passes, the requirement ends earlier on March 31.

Highways Where Rules Apply

The mandate covers highways in the North and Interior, sections of the South Coast including the Sea to Sky, and parts of Vancouver Island such as the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14 and Highway 28. While the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not required to follow the rule, unpredictable weather means it is still wise to prepare.

Meeting the Tire Standards

To qualify, tires must display either the M+S mark, which stands for mud and snow, or the mountain and snowflake symbol. They must also have a tread depth of at least 3.5 millimetres. Failing to meet these standards could result in a $121 fine, which makes investing in the right set of tires the smart choice.

Extra Rules for Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicles have their own requirements. Starting Oct. 1, most must carry chains on designated routes, with roadside signs indicating when chains are needed. These rules do not apply to the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere they help keep traffic flowing safely during storms.
